An essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are known as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted. Essential oil contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Essential oils have been used in medicine throughout history. Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine that uses essential oils and other aromatic compounds. Medicinally oils are used for skin treatments to remedies for cancer.

Essential oils are used extensively in the cosmetic and skin care industry all over the world. Apart from this they are used in homes and hospitality industry according to the guidelines of aromatherapy. The different ways in which essential oils can be used are:

  • By burning Incense sticks
  • By burning an oil burner – In the cup of a oil, burner put some water. Add a few drops of oil of your choice. Burn a tea light under the cup. Aroma of the oil will fill the room.
  • By adding a few drops of the oil in the bath water.
  • By adding a few drops in the water for mopping.
  • By directly applying the oil on the face temples for instant relief.
  • By making a spray by mixing the essential oil with water.
